Longview at Henderson - at Lion Stadium - October 15th, 1948 - via Dallas Morning News
Skelton stars as Lions blank Lobos, 13-0 The Henderosn Lions won their first district game in two years of campaigning in District 11-AA here Friday night. With dimpled little Joe Skelton in the driver's seat, the Lions rolled over the Longview Lobos, 13 to 0, to extend their 1948 victory string to five. It was sweet revenge for Henderson which last year was humiliated 33 to 0 by Longview. Skelton was the whole story for the Lions. His 26-yard run in the second quarter set up the first Henderson score, and his pass to Thurman Warren in the third quarter set up the second score. After his sparkling run in the first quarter, Delbert Propes, Warren and O'Neal Brightwell combined to punch the ball over from the Longview 14-yard line. It was Brightwell who scored from 5 yards out. Skelton missed the try for point. Skelton's pass completion to Warren in the third quarter carried 38 yards down to the Longview 25, with Warren's brilliant running eating up most of the yardage. After three plays had moved the ball to the Longview 12, Skelton personally engineered the touchdown on a drive over his own left tackle. This time his conversion was good, and Henderson's scoring was over for the night. Rugged line play by both forward walls caused numberous fumbles. Twice Longview drives died as a result of fumbles or pass interceptions. Big Carlton McCormack of Henderson picked off two Longview passes and played-a-bang-up defensive game. Johnny Linney, little 140-pound passing wizard, kept Longview in the game. He threw 31 passes, completed 11, and accounted for 146 yards. That just about summed up the Longview offense. Henderson, whose pass attack had been feared by the Lobos, kept to the ground and depended on slashing runs of Warren, Brightwell, and Skelton to run up 185 yards. The bright spot in defeat for Longview was fullback Jim Nelton. His booming punts kept Henderson back on its heel through much of the game. On two occasions he kicked out on the Lions' 4-yard line, and his punts consistently sailed out inside the Lions' 20. Scoring 2nd - Henderson (6-0) - O'Neal Brigthwell (5 yard run) 3rd - Henderson (13-0) - Joe Skelton (12 yard run)

This isn't a game article but using this to preserve Longview football history, I thought this article merited being posted - via Dallas Morning News
Fans rally behind winless Longview The Longview High School Lobos did not win a single game in District 8-AA grid play this year, but indications SAturday were that they had at least won the hearts of Longview fans. The Longview News-Journal planned to publish a 48-ypage Sunday tabloid-form supplement devoted to the Lobos and Coach Maco Stewart. The supplement was expected to typify the spirit of Longview supporters, who continued to turn out all through the losing season. Longview had only one veteran, Fox Cashell, back from its 1947 eleven which went to the semifinals in the schoolboy playoffs.
