Longview stuns Texarkana, 18-6 Longview's spunky Lobos shocked the District 4-3A champion Texarkana Tigers, 18-6, here Friday night in the drizzling rain, handing the visitors their first defeat of the season. The upset, one of the biggest in Texas schoolboy football this season, had no bearing on the title race, for the Tigers had already clinched a playoff berth. The Lobos, out of title contention, outplayed the highly-rated Tigers statistically and point-wise after an evenly-played first half. Longview scored first, getting a touchdown in the first quarter. Tony Rothrock rammed over from the 2-yard line for six points. Texarkana, 5th ranked in the News AAA Poll, recovered a Lobo fumble in the second period and marched 49 yards to pay dirt with George McKinney scoring the 12. Deadlocked 6-6 at halftime, the Lobos came bouncing back in the third with Jerry Crawford passing 18-yards to Rothrock for a touchdown. A recovered fumble on the Texarkana 37 opened the gates for the touchdown that spoiled the Tigers' fine record of six victories, two ties in eight previous games to Friday night. The final Longview marker came in the fourth period after the Lobos had halted a long Texarkana drive on the Longview 15. In 14 plays, the Lobos scored with Dub Thomas diving in from three yards. Scoring 1st - Longview (6-0) - Tony Rothrock (2 yard run) 2nd - Texas High (6-6) - George McKinney (12 yard run) 3rd - Longview (12-6) - Tony Rothrock (18 yard pass from Jerry Crawford) 4th - Longview (18-6) - Dub Thomas (3 yard run)
