Longview vs South Oak Cliff - at Lobo Stadium - September 14th, 1956 - via Dallas Morning News
Lobos nip SOC, 20-14, as Moore, Burks star
Led by the brilliant running of halfback Harry Moore and fullback Pete Burks, the Longview Lobos defeated the South Oak Cliff Golden Bears of Dallas, 20-14, here Friday night It was the opening game of the season for both teams.
South Oak Cliff also presented a star of the evening in fullback Bradley Hartwyck, who ran back a Longview kickoff for 94 yards for this team's first touchdown. This was late in the third quarter.
Longview jumped into a 20-0 lead before South Oak Cliff managed to cross the Lobo goal line.
After that the Lobos had to rally fight off the valiant Golden Bears. The battle was so hot that the Golden Bears were knocking at the Longview goal with one minute and 19 seconds left to play. But the Lobos were equal tot he occasion and held the Golden Bears on downs. But the Dallas boys lacked only one foot of making the first down on the Lobo 8.
The first quarter was scoreless.
In the middle of the second quarter, Moore took a pitch from quarterback Bill Bolger and went 19 yards untouched to cross the goal. Robert Abney converted. The score was 7-0 at the half.
Four plays after the kickoff in the second half, Burks took a pitchout from Bolger and went 56 yards around left end for a touchdown. Abney again converted. Longview led, 14-0.
The third and final Longview touchdown came near the end of the third quarter when Burks took another pitchout from Bolger and went 53 yards around right end to hit pay dirt. Abney's kick for the extra point was wide. Longview led 20 to 0.
Abney kicked off for Longview and Hartwyck took it on his own 6 and raced down the sidelines 94 yards for the touchdown. Ronnie Mabra kicked the extra point. The score was 20-7 at the end of the third quarter.
On the second play of the fourth quarter, halfback Buddy Phillips broke over right tackle and 62 yards for South Oak Cliff's second touchdown. Mabra again converted
