Scots wallop Lobos
Highland Park got its offense rolling in A-OK style Friday night and the result was a gratifying 33-14 victory over Longview at Highlander Stadium.
Quarterback Jim Crosland, fullback Rusk Cone, and a fellow named Kyle Rote Jr. triggered the win-the Scot's fourth of the year against only one loss.
Crosland scored touchdown on runs of 11 and one yards and completed a big night by hitting Rote with a 36-yard scoring play.
Cone proved to be the best runner. The 185-pound junior rushed for 122 yards in 26 carries. Rote, meanwhile, played only in spot assignments, but was impressive.
Besides that 36-yard touchdown, Rote help set up two others with a 26-yard pass from Crosland a neat 40-yard punt return.
Longview scored firs ton a 57-yard keeper by quarterback Steve Judy with 9:32 still left in the opening period. End Keith Parker converted for a brief 7-0 marking.
But Crosland brought the Scots right back and moved them 64 yards in nine plays, with the payoff a beautiful 36-yard strike to Rote, who worked his way behind the secondary and took the ball on the run into the end zone.
Halfback Jimmy Merritt kicked the first of three extra points.
Then in the second quarter, Crosland hit Rote on the same play - this time for a 27-yard gainer, to set up the next touchdown. Halfback Dennis Rushing took it over from the four, but end Danny Bogue blocked the extra point attempt.
The Scots still weren't satisfied. They came back for another before halftime, with Rote once again making the key play. This time, he took a punt on his 27, picked up good blocks and raced all the way tot he Lobos' 34 - good for 40 yards.
Seven plays later, Crosland rolled out and went the final 11 for the touchdown and a 19-7 halftime margin.
Highland Park's fourth score of the game came with 2:06 remaining in the third period when halfback Larry Loper plowed two yards, capping a 79-yard drive in 19 plays. Crosland's 18-yard run with the big play.
Then Longview got rolling, with Judy doing most of the damage with a 42-yard toes to end Cecil Newton. The payoff was a 3-yard plunge by halfback Rodney Hill. Parker converted again.
That tightened it a bit, 26-14. But the Scots kept rolling and tacked on one more. Crosland climaxed a 69-yard effort with a 1-yard keeper.
It was a pleasant sight to see Highland Park fans. Last week, against Sherman, the Scots' offense bugged down and showed only 37 yards for the night.
But a week can make a difference. Just ask Longview.
