Ball Knocked Off Unbeaten List
The Ball High Tornadoes fell from the ranks of the unbeaten Friday night as the Longview Lobos scored in every quarter and ended up a 35-15 winner before 9,000 fans in Longview.
The Lobos wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as they took the opening kick-off and marched 80 yards in 10 plays for the first score of the evening.
Sherman Johnson capped the Longview drive with a 23 yard burst up the middle on a draw play for the Lobo touchdown. Johnson also sparked the scoring drive with a 22 yarder that lead to the score.
Jim Tutt kicked the extra point and with 7:54 left in the first quarter Longview lead 7-0.
The Tornadoes broke the deadlock at 9:23 of the second quarter. Safety Darryl Smith stepped in front of a Hosea Taylor pass and raced 62 yards untouched with the interception and the Tors were on the scoreboard.
The extra point by Rufus Whittaker was good and the score was tied at seven apiece early in the second quarter.
Longview took the following kick-off and returned it to its 37 yard line where the Lobos went to work. Twelve plays and 63 yards later, Johnson scored again for Longview from two yards out and the home team lead 13-7 after a missed conversion. The half ended here with Ball trailing 13-7.
The Lobos took advantage of a Tor fumble at the Ball High 21 yard line and six plays later Johnson scored once again. Dinky Edwards got two points on the conversion as the Lobos stretched their lead to 21-7 with 8:55 left in the third period.
Longview racked up two more touchdowns in the final stanza as Edwards scored on a 4 yard run that capped a 50 yard drive in 7 plays. And linebacker Donald Walkins picked off a Lance Courville pass and returned it 55 yards for the touchdown. Both extra points were good and the Lobos held a 35-7 lead with five minutes left in the game.
Galveston managed a tally late in the final stanza when the Tors drove 74 yards in 8 plays for the second Ball score of the night.
Quarterback Lance Courville hit end Dale Shinelte with a 15 yard scoring toss and the Tors tallied a six point play. Anthony Ruben ran the conversion over the two point play and the score stood at 35-15 with 3:27 left in the game.
The onside kick by the Tors was not recovered and the clock ran out with Longview the winner 35-15.
