Lobos outlast Tornadoes, 17-13
The Longview Lobos built up a 17-0 first half lead and then weathered a strong second half Ball High rally to outlast the Golden Tornadoes from Galveston 17-13 here Friday night.
The victory was Longview's fourth in as many starts this season. It was Ball High's first loss as the Tornadoes were knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten.
A field goal and a pair of first half touchdowns gave Longview what seemed to be a comfortable lead.
Ball High was not to be denied, and the Tors dominated the second half. Ball had ball possession and driving deep in Longview territory when the game ended.
Ball High went into the game rated No. 5 in the state and was a 4.8 point favorite over Longview, rated No. 13.
The Lobos drove 56 yards in 10 plays to gain their first score, a 40-yard field goal by Jim Tutt. It came with 4:36 left in the first period.
Longview widened the gap with 7:57 to go in the second period by going 12 yards in two plays on a drive that was set up when Greb Brown intercepted a Ball High pass and ran it back 34 yards. Dinky Edwards scored the touchdown from four yards out and Tutt added the conversion kick.
The Lobos struck again in the second period, this time with 3:14 left. The Longview scoring drive covered 56 yards in 10 plays, and the touchdown was made on a 21-yard pass from Kenny Jackson to Brown. Tutt kicked the extra point.
Ball High got into the scoring act in the second half.
The first Golden Tornado touchdown came on an 80 yard drive that used only two plays. The big bomb in the drive was a 75-yard pass and run play from Lance Courville to Vincent Courville. David Garza kicked the extra point to prune Longview's lead to 17-7.
Ball High's final touchdown came in the last period with but few minutes remaining in the game. This time Ball High used 15 plays to drive 92 yards.
The touchdown came when Rafield Moore recovered a fumble in the end zone. Moody Hatcher attempted to smash in to the end zone, but he fumbled at the one-yard line. The ball rolled in to the end zone, where Moore pounched on it for the Tor touchdown.
Lance Courville attempted a pass for the two-point conversion, but it failed when he was sacked.
Ball Goes to Waco to close out its pre-district schedule against Richfield.
