No. 1 Longview rolls to victory Top ranked Longview, led by 34 returning lettermen including blue-chip running back prospect Joe Johnson, easily dispatched Fort Worth Eastern Hills and rolled to a 38-14 victory in Texas schoolboy football action. Johnson rushed for two touchdowns Friday night to carry the top-ranked teams in the Associated Press Schoolbody Football Poll for Class 5-A. Longview last year had a 10-2 season and lost in the second round of the playoffs. It was the opening game in the Lobos season. The Highlanders never recovered after Longview scored in its second offensive drive of the game, a 55-yard run by Johnson on a Statue of Liberty play. In other Class 5A play, second-ranked Odessa Permian stalled El Paso Coronado 27-0, No. 5 Houston Yates defeated Brazoswood 55-12 and sixth-ranked Galveston Ball crushed Lufkin 14-9. Longview sailed to a 17-0 first quarter advantage as Johnson wrapped up the opening period with five carries for 96 yards and two touchdowns. For the night, Johnson - considered by college recruiters as one of the state's premier running back prospects - rushed 13 times for a game-high 115 yards. Turnovers and breakdowns in the Highlander punting game set up five scoring drivers for Longview before the third quarter. Eastern Hills coughed up the ball three times on fumbles, had three passes interception, and one punt partially blocked. In the second quarter, Highlander end Reggie Green blocked a punt that was returned 52 yards for a score, cutting ghte Longview lead. But several plays later, Longview won revenge on Eric Harris' 10-yard scoring run, which made the score 24-7.
